The WTCR visits the Autódromo do Estoril for the first time this week, marking the return of the World Touring cars to the Portuguese circuit 13 years after the 2008 WTCC.
Local hero Tiago Monteiro is especially looking forward to the event, because he has good memories of the 2008 WTCC, when he won the second race driving a SEAT Leon. Monteiro has also started the current season in the best way, with victory in the WTCR opening on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in his Münnich Motorsport-run Honda Civic Type R.
The Portuguese driver lies second in the standings, on equal points with his teammate Néstor Girolami and six points behind Jean-Karl Vernay who won the Nürburgring second race at the wheel of a Team Engstler Hyundai Elantra N.
Other drivers who proved to be in great shape are Lynk & Co teammates Yvan Muller and Santiago Urrutia, who are placed fourth and fifth in the standings, four points behind the pair of Monteiro and Girolami; Tom Coronel (Comtoyou Racing, Audi RS 3 LMS) who claimed his first victory in TCR Europe last weekend on his home ground at Zandvoort and Mikel Azcona (Zengő Motorsport, CUPRA Leon Competición) who won the opening round of the PURE ETCR series at Vallelunga last Sunday.
