After breaking his duck in TCR Eastern Europe yesterday with his maiden victory in Brno’s Race 1, Carol Wittke encored winning again today from Bartosz Groszek. Michal Makeš cruised to the end in fifth position and secured the title by four points only ahead of Tomas Pekař who finished the race in third place.
At the start, pole sitter Sebastian Steibel led from Pekař and Makeš who were second and third on the grid. However, during the first lap both title contenders passed Steibel who was swallowed by the field and dropped to ninth.
Behind the leading pair, Wittke was third, while Grozsek passed Petr Čižek, moving into fourth.
Knowing he had to win the race to be champion, Pekař tried to pull away from Makeš who focused on defending the second place from Wittke and Groszek. Wittke passed Makeš for second in lap 3, and in the following lap the leader of the standings lost P3 to Groszek.
Pekař’s dream to be champion vanished in lap 5, when he lost the lead to Wittke; one lap later Groszek too passed Pekař for second.
From that moment on, Makeš began to relax knowing he had the title in the pocket and during the final lap he handed the fourth position to Steibel who had recovered.
During the penultimate lap, Giacomo Ghermandi and Radim Adámek went off onto the gravel while fighting for P9, while Czech Rally champion Petr Semerád beat Tomasz Rzepecki for P7 after a thrilling battle that lasted for the whole race.
