Andreas Wernersson won Race 2 at Mantorp Park – the final race of the 2019 TCR Scandinavia season – but fourth place was enough to give Robert Dahlgren the Drivers’ title in a battle that went down to the wire. Wernersson made a great start from pole position to lead the field into Turn 1, but more importantly Dahlgren’s CUPRA stayed ahead of the Audi RS 3 LMS of Tobias Brink – the only driver who could deny Dahlgren the title. Race 1 winner Mattias Andersson passed Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky for second place on Lap 1, while Dahlgren moved into fourth position when he passed the other PWR Racing car of Daniel Haglöf.
Further down the order, tenth place changed hands on Lap 2 when Kristian Moe Sætheren passed Albin Wärnelöv, only for the position to be reversed one lap later. Also on Lap 3, Hannes Morin passed Tomas Engström for eighth place.
While Andersson was clearly aiming to pass Wernersson to secure his second race victory of the day, all eyes were on Dahlgren and Brink. Going into the race separated by 17 points, Brink knew that his slender hopes of beating Dahlgren rested on him finishing in the top two places and Dahlgren failing to score, but he now lay in sixth place with Haglöf between him and Dahlgren.
The matter was settled just before the race reached its halfway point, with Brink going off on Lap 7 and the Audi ending its season nose-first against the barrier. Haglöf later received a drive-through penalty for his part in the incident, but that was of little comfort to a frustrated Brink, who’d earlier complained about the way Andersson had muscled his way past him in the final corner of Race 1.
Unlike that earlier result, Brink’s teammate Wernersson kept Andersson at bay to take his fourth win of the season, recording a lights-to-flag victory by 0.744 seconds. Åhlin-Kottulinsky completed the podium around five seconds behind the pair, with Dahlgren finishing fourth and Morin fifth.
Dahlgren therefore took the TCR Scandinavia Drivers’ title, finishing 29 points ahead of Brink, with Wernersson finishing the season in third place, five points behind his teammate. Wernersson’s win, together with fifth place for Morin, helped Brink Motorsport to win the Teams’ championship by the same margin – 29 points – over PWR Racing.
