The Volkswagen Golf GTI cars showed a superior pace and won both races in the Baltic Touring Car Championship’s second event of the season that was held at the Botniaring in Finland.
Skuba Racing Team’s Džiugas Tovilavičius set pole position and claimed a lights-to-flag victory in Race 1, while GSR Motorsport’s Julius Adomavičius had his chances swept away by an early incident. He made up for the disappointment by taking a dominant win from Tovilavičius in Race 2.
DHL Racing’s Ramūnas Čapkauskas – the winner of both races in the season opener at Bikernieki – had a bad weekend as his CUPRA didn’t have the pace to compete for the top places; however he retained the leadership of the standings, one point over Tovilavičius, while Adomavičius lies third, a further three points adrift.
During the opening lap, there was contact between Vaks and Adomavičius; the latter was forced to pit for repairs and rejoined one lap down.
In the final part of the race, Vaks’ second place was threatened by Westman, however the Finn made a small mistake on the last lap and had to settle in third position.
At the rolling start for Race 2, Adomavičius and Westman sprinted from the second row ahead of the pole sitter Tovilavičius and Vaks. During lap 1, Westman made a mistake and dropped to fourth, while Vaks overtook Tovilavičius for second after making contact. For the rest of the race, Adomavičius cruised towards his maiden victory while Vaks and Tovilavičius had a close fight for the second place that was decided on the penultimate lap, when Tovilavičius was able to find a gap and went through.
The next race meeting of the BaTCC takes place at Pärnu, in Estonia, on June 29/30.
