The WTCR returns to the streets of Vila Real, where the competitors of the FIA World Cup will race in rounds 16, 17 and 18. It's the last event in Europe before the trip to the Far East that will conclude the series' second season.
Last year's visit to the Portuguese circuit is mostly remembered for the incident at the start of Saturday's Race 1, when the Volkswagen Golf GTI cars of Rob Huff and Mehdi Bennani started from the front row, collided and triggered a catastrophic pileup that eliminated seven cars.
That race was won by Yvan Muller who had miraculously escaped the carnage thanks to a poor start, while Sunday's races were won by Mat'o Homola's Peugeot and Thed Björk's Hyundai.
This year, the WTCR arrives to Vila Real with Esteban Guerrieri (Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic) as the points leader. The Argentine has scored 215 points and leads by 45 from Norbert Michelisz (BRC Squadra Corse Hyundai i30 N), while Björk (Cyan Racing Lynk&Co 03) lies in third position a further nine points adrift.
