TCR China’s Race 3 at Zhuhai saw the TeamWork Motorsport Volkswagen Golf GTI shared by Sunny Wong and Alex Hui taking a brilliant victory after a strong recovery in the second half of the 60-minute race.
Only seven cars made the field as six had been damaged in different incidents during this early morning’s Race 1. Amongst the missing cars were Wang Hao’s Audi, Terence Tse’s Honda and the D Garage Kia of Lo Sze Ho and Edmond Chang.
The DRT Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI of Lv Xin Min was on pole position, but took a slow start and it was Eurico De Jesus who took the lead in the MacPro Racing Honda Civic FK8 followed by Li Lin’s LEO Racing Golf and Hui.
On lap 4, Li Lin went off the track and Hui moved up to second, while Kong Kin Chong was third in the second MacPro Racing Honda and Carson Tang fourth in the NewFaster Racing Audi.
Halfway through the race, Tang overtook Kong for third and they were both chasing the second-placed Hui.
After all cars pitted for the driver change, Henry Ho who had replaced De Jesus kept on leading, but his pace began to fade and Hui’s codriver Sunny Wong was closing on him at the rate of three seconds per lap. Eventually, on lap 25 Wong stole the lead from Ho with the latter trying to defend second position from a charging Tang.
With four minutes left in the race, Ho’s Honda stopped on the track with a flat front tyre, which promoted Tang to second and the Honda of Kong and Lam Ka Chun to third.
Wong and Hui left Zhuhai as the leaders in the standings, with an advantage of six points over Ho-Badaraco.
The TCR China championship will return to Zhuhai for the second race meeting on 30th June, 1st July.
