WestCoast Racing has confirmed that it will enter two cars for the first TCR UK races at Silverstone. The Swedish team was amongst the first to sign up to the TCR concept and fielded cars in the TCR International Series from the very beginning. The team ran Honda Civic TCR cars in 2015 and 2016, but switched to the Volkswagen Golf GTI for the 2017 season and it’s the Volkswagen cars that the team will bring to the UK.
Aside from its 14 TCR International Series race victories, the team also has a long history in Scandinavian Touring Cars, winning the STCC title on no fewer than five occasions.
Making their TCR debuts, Swedish siblings Jessica and Andreas Bäckman will drive the two cars. Both are three-time Swedish karting champions in their respective classes, with 20-year old Jessica and her 22-year old brother Andreas making the switch to the RX2 category of the FIA World Rallycross Championship for 2017, competing directly against each other for the first time. Andreas finished the season ahead of Jessica, so the family rivalry will continue at Silverstone over the Easter weekend.
James Nixon, WestCoast Racing Team Manager commented: “We’re really pleased to be able to confirm our TCR UK entry with two cars for Andreas and Jessica. We’ve already completed one test in Zandvoort and, although you can never read too much into testing at this time of year, we’re more than happy with our pace after only one test. This year is a very big learning year for both Jessica and Andreas but throughout the Zandvoort test it was a pleasure to see two young drivers hungry for success.”
