Gabriele Tarquini won the final race at the Hungaroring, scoring his third victory of the season and stretching his lead in the Drivers’ championship. For the whole race, that was first disrupted by the safety car and then suspended for a rain shower, Tarquini was shadowed by his teammate Norbert Michelisz who failed to win any of the weekend’s three races on his home soil despite starting twice from pole position.
Tarquini took a great start from the second row of the grid and took the lead from Michelisz and the Honda of Esteban Guerrieri.
The safety car was soon deployed to recover Aurélien Panis’ Audi that had spun at Turn 3, while Guerrieri was given a drive-through for false start.
When the race resumed, Yvan Muller began chasing the two leaders, but a sudden shower prompted the red flag. After a 15-minute break, Tarquini and Michelisz retained their positions, with Muller’s third place threatened by Yann Ehrlacher.
Positions did not change, with Benjamin Lessennes securing a brilliant fifth ahead of Dániel Nagy – who scored in all three races on his WTCR debut – and James Thompson.
Rob Huff, the winner of Race 2 ranked eighth and was followed by Thed Björk who was able to steal ninth from Jean-Karl Vernay.
Tarquini’s point-toll went up to 118, 36 clear of Ehrlacher, with Muller just a further five points adrift.
The third race meeting of WTCR will take place at the Nürburgring Nordschleife on May 11 and 12.
