Michael McCann encored his Saturday’s Race 1 victory at Watkins Glen in the sixth event of TC America.
The course of today’s race was pretty similar to yesterday’s: McCann took the lead on lap 6 and built a small margin that nearly faded at half distance. But then in the final ten minutes he increased the pace again and put two seconds between him and the pursuing trio of Michael Hurczyn, Nate Vincent and James Walker.
At the start Vincent sprinted from the pole, but Hurczyn overtook him during the opening lap, while Mason Filippi passed McCann for P3; Victor González spun and rejoined at the back of the TCA field. McCann reacted quickly, passed Filippi on lap 2, Vincent on lap 3 and then Hurczyn on lap 6. In the same lap, Travis Hill and Stephen Vajda overtook Bryan Putt moving into first and second of the DSG Cup.
Filippi pitted on lap 7 with some technical issues and rejoined one lap down, while Walker closed the gap from the Volkswagen duo of Hurczyn and Vincent. The three of them began to chase McCann whose advantage was reduced to half-a-second. However, positions did not change. McCann was able to build a small cushion again while Walker shadowed the Volkswagen cars but couldn’t find a gap to pass. Hill, Vajda and Christian Cole filled the podium of the DSG Cup.
In the standings, Hurczyn keeps a comfortable lead of 44 points over his teammate Vincent, while Walker has moved ahead of Filippi into the third position.
TC America’s penultimate event will take place at Road America on September 20/22.
