Yvan Muller claimed his and Lynk&Co’s second victory in the home event of the Chinese manufacturer at the end of another chaotic race that was disrupted twice by the safety car and saw a number of competitors involved in a series of incidents.
Yann Ehrlacher followed his uncle to secure a 1-2 finish for Lynk&Co, while Gabriele Tarquini completed the podium.
With both Norbert Michelisz and Esteban Guerrieri retired, Muller closed the gap from the two leaders of the standings; he’s now 17 points behind Michelisz and one behind Guerrieri. However, these results remain provisional due to the several investigations ongoing after todays’ races.
At the start Muller and Ehrlacher led the field. In the middle of the pack there was a first collision between Frédéric Vervisch, Néstor Girolami, Daniel Haglöf and Jean-Karl Vernay; the Swede and the French were both off. A couple of turns later Vervisch hit Michelisz and sent him into Andy Priaulx’s car; the Guernseyman spun and rejoined, while Michelisz retired. The safety car was deployed and circulated until the fifth lap.
When racing resumed, Niels Langeveld went off into the gravel, while Mehdi Bennani and Tiago Monteiro made contact on the main straight; Monteiro lost control and crashed into the pit wall. Bennani was then given a drive-through for causing the incident. The safety car was back into action and during the neutralization, Guerrieri pulled up with some technical issues.
Racing resumed on lap 10, Tarquini passed Augusto Farfus for P3 and Vervisch passed Girolami for P7. The two Alfa Romeo cars of Ma Qing Hua and Kevin Ceccon were recovering after starting from the back and the Chinese began chasing Girolami for P8. They made contact on lap 15 and Ma got the worst and retired.
In the last three laps the positions didn’t change. Muller won from Ehrlacher and Tarquini; Farfus retained the fourth position ahead of Thed Björk, Aurélien Panis and Vervisch.
The next event of WTCR will be on October 25th/27th at Suzuka.
