With a last-gasp attempt, Eric Scalvini stripped Luca Engstler of the pole position for the ADAC TCR Germany’s second race at Hockenheim. Despite his brilliant effort the Wimmer Werk Motorsport’s Italian driver could not avoid dropping out of the title fight. Scalvini is now 102 points behind Engstler, when 95 are still at stake. Dominik Fugel, whose gap from the leader went up to 90 points is the only driver who could, at least in theory, prevent Engstler from becoming champion.
Halfway through the 20-minute Qualifying, Engstler posted a provisional fastest lap of 1:47.200 and then returned to the pits, leaving his competitors to try and beat him. For most of the remaining minutes all improvements were limited to the positions behind the leader, with Jonas Karklys (1:47.369) moving into P2, the only driver capable to threaten Engstler’s time, and Dominik Fugel (1:47.912) advancing to third.
However, as the session was about to expire, Scalvini completed a perfect lap in 1:47.167, stealing the pole by 33 thousandths of a second. Then Martin Andersen clocked a 1:47.389 that placed him fourth on the grid, 20 thousandths behind Karklys. Dominik Fugel was then demoted to fifth and will share the third row of the grid with Venezuelan guest driver Sergio López.
The second race will start at 13:20 CEST, with live streaming at www.tcr-series.com.
