René Münnich and his Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R continued their domination in the TCR Middle East sprint races. In today’s Race 2 at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, Münnich claimed a fourth victory, beating Luc Breukers’ Red Camel-Jordans.nl CUPRA once again.
Kieran Griffin started from pole position on the reverse grid in the JW Bird Volkswagen Golf GTI, but during the first lap he was passed by Münnich and Breukers who had a brief fight for the lead before the German driver began to outdistance Breukers.
Behind them, Griffin kept Tamás Tenke at bay until the young Hungarian pitted with a broken wheel bearing at the end of lap 2, joining his team principal Zoltán Zengő who had failed to start following a technical issue occurred during Friday’s Race 1. Tenke rejoined after two laps, but then returned to the pits for good at the end of lap 6.
The second half of the race was eventless, with the three remaining cars separated by large gaps, although in the end Griffin was able to close in on Breukers whose CUPRA suffered from an engine issue.
Race 3 will follow at 12:00 local time, over the distance of 4 hours; it will also count as Round 2 of the 24H Middle East Series.
