Tyler Maxson made four out of four race wins in TC America at Virginia International Raceway. The 15-year old driver from Copeland Motorsports started from P3, but managed to take the lead from the pole sitter Victor González during the opening lap. Afterwards he controlled the race until it was neutralized by the safety car that circulated until the end. Scott Smithson claimed his second podium result of the weekend by finishing third.
At the start González took the lead from the pole, while Maxson sprinted from P3 on the grid to overtake Smithson. Moments later the Hyundai driver took command of the race and pulled away, leaving González defending P2 from Smithson. Behind them Roy Block and Luke Rumburg had a close fight for P4, swapping positions a few times.
Maxson pushed hard over the first few laps to create a gap, then began to control the race paying a lot of attention while passing the slower cars of the TCA and TC classes, which helped González, who had shaken Smithson off, to close the gap.
Midway through the race there was an entertaining battle for P5 that involved Rumburg, Tristan Herbert, Olivia Askew, Alex Papadopulos and CJ Moses. Eventually Herbert moved up into P5, while Papadopulos dropped down on lap 12.
One lap later, a TC car crashed and the safety car was deployed with 11 minutes still on the clock. Racing would not resume and so Maxson won from González, Smithson and Block.
Race 3 is scheduled for 11:20 Eastern Time (17:20 CEST) on Sunday; live streaming at www.tcr-series.com.
