Danish touring car stalwarts Jan Magnussen and Michael Carlsen shared wins at the second weekend of the 2021 TCR Denmark at Jyllandsringen, with the 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2008 DTC champions racking up all the victories.
The LM Racing CUPRA cars of Nicolai Sylvest and Magnussen started from the front row for Race 1. While Sylvest was on pole, it was Magnussen who got the better start driving around the outside of his teammate into Turn 1. Sylvest tried to keep with him, but left the door open for Jensen, who put his Honda down the inside at Turn 5 and took second place.
The top four pulled away from the pack behind, with Jacob Mathiassen’s Alfa Romeo the last of the lead pack, while Casper Elgaard had quickly moved up to fifth after starting from tenth, following his exclusion from Qualifying 2 yesterday.
The race settled down, with Magnussen slowly pulling away from Jensen and Sylvest. During the final laps, Elgaard caught up to Mathiassen and was applying pressure; Mathiassen gave up fourth when he locked up at Turn 1 two laps from the end.
Magnussen won by almost two seconds ahead of Jensen, with Sylvest a distant third.
The top ten were reversed for the second race, which put Carlsen on pole in his Peugeot, ahead of René Povlsen’s Volkswagen, and Michael Markussen’s Peugeot. Carlsen had a good start and led into Turn 1, while Povlsen was shuffled back behind the chasing Peugeot cars of Markussen and Elgaard. Jensen made a rocket start moving up into fifth from P9 on the grid. At the back end of the top ten, the two LM Racing CUPRA cars hadn’t made much progress at the start, with Magnussen then taking Sylvest with him as he worked his way up the order; they passed Mathiassen, the Peugeot of Gustav Birch and then finally Kenn Bach’s Honda to get to sixth and seventh in the final order.
Up front, Carlsen, who last won the Danish touring car championship twenty years ago, built up a two-second lead over Markussen, who fought hard throughout the race to keep Elgaard behind him to the finish. Carlsen therefore led an all-Peugeot podium, and finally stopped Magnussen’s run of victories.
The grid for Race 3 was based on the points scored across the day’s earlier races, which put Magnussen on pole ahead of Jensen. The latter had a good start and was almost ahead into the first corner, but the two drivers made contact; they were still ahead of Markussen and Elgaard who also hit each other at the first corner and went into a half-spin. Birch then clambered into Sylvest’s CUPRA, with Birch taking terminal damage and Sylvest dropping down the order.
Magnussen emerged from the drama in the lead ahead of Jensen and Carlsen, though the contact into Turn 1 would soon develop for Jensen into a left-rear puncture; he headed for the pits on lap two, dropped to the back and would only be able to recover to 15th. Jensen’s troubles promoted Carlsen to second and Elgaard to third ahead of Markussen, while Magnussen was pulling away fast, building up an eight-second lead over the Peugeot trio behind.
Magnussen has now won five of the first six races and leads the standings by 54 points over Elgaard.
The next event takes place at the Copenhagen Grand Prix on August 6-8.
