Lo Sze Ho, at the wheel of a Maximum Racing Honda Civic, took his maiden TCR Asia win in an eventful Race 2 at Bangsaen. Diego Moran (Liqui Moly Team Engstler Volkswagen Golf GTI) took second, with both men closing the gap and relaunching their chances in the overall standings, that are led again by Moran’s teammate Mitchell Cheah who made up from yesterday’s bad performance to finish on the podium today.
At the start, pole sitter Kelvin Wong (Elegant Racing SEAT León) stalled and created commotion, but there were no incidents. Wong’s teammate and yesterday’s Race 1 winner Alex Liu took an early lead before he was sent into a spin by Cheah and then passed by Luca Engstler, Lo Sze Ho, Moran and Jakaphran Davee (Alphafactory SEAT León), who delivered a lively fight.
Engstler was putting pressure on his fellow colleague Cheah until he outbraked himself and crashed out of the race on lap 4. On the following lap, Lo Sze Ho’s fierce attacks on the leader succeeded, and the Hongkonger began to pull away at an impressive pace, leaving Cheah and Moran fighting for second.
Immediately behind them there was the battle for TCR Thailand, with Davee closely chased by Pattarapol Vongprai (Vattana Motorsport Honda Civic) and Nattanid Leewattanavaragul (Morin Racing SEAT León).
On lap 10 Moran overtook Cheah for second and moments later Vongprai crashed while trying to overtake Davee. This prompted the safety car out and during the full-course yellow period Leewattanavaragul spun and rejoined at the back.
At the restart, with only 2 laps left, Lo Sze Ho kept the situation under control and went to claim his maiden victory from Moran and Cheah. Davee was classified fourth and took victory in TCR Thailand. Wong recovered to finish fifth ahead of Nattachak Hanjitkasem and Leewattanavaragul who completed the TCR Thailand podium.
In the TCR Asia standings, Cheah retook the leadership with 100 points, but Lo Sze Ho is a close second, three points behind; Engstler dropped to third with a gap of 12 points. Vongprai retained the lead in TCR Thailand with 108 points, only one clear of Davee; Chariya Nuya is third, 17 points behind.
TCR Asia will resume at Yeongam in Korea on 25/26 August, in the inaugural event of TCR Korea, while TCR Thailand will come to an end at Buriram on 27/28 October.
