After they were crowned TCR China champions at the end of today’s second race, Alex Hui and Sunny Wong finished the season in style cruising to yet another win in the 60-minute Race 3 at Guangdong International Circuit. This was the sixth victory for their TeamWork Motorsport Volkswagen Golf GTI.
However, it was not an easy win for the Hongkongers; in fact they retook the lead only 24 minutes before the end, when Xia Yi Li made a mistake under a light rain and beached the Freely Racing Alfa Romeo Giulietta onto the gravel while holding a comfortable lead.
His teammate and Race 1 winner Ma Qing Hua provided a great show in the first half of the race; Ma moved into the lead on lap 9, when he took advantage from the lapping of Li Ke Ning to pass Hui. He then increased his pace and built a leading margin of several seconds before observing the compulsory pit stop. When his co-driver Xia Yi Li took to the track, he enjoyed a 26-second lead over Wong.
After Xia’s incident the race turned into a procession. Wong went on to cross the finishing line 29 seconds ahead of the Leo Racing Golf shared by Li Lin and Li Si Cheng. Third place went to the Champ X T.A. Motorsport Audi RS3 LMS of Gary Lo and Falco Lau, one lap down, while Shi Nai Jie drove his TeamWork Motorsport Audi to finish fourth, 6 laps behind the winners. Eventually Xia Yi Li rejoined with five minutes left on the clock, but failed to be classified with a gap of 13 laps.
TCR China final standings see Hui and Wong on top with 157 points, 30 more than the absent MacPro Racing pairing of Henry Ho-Eurico De Jesus; Tian Li Ying and Li Xue Feng were classified third with 92.5 points in the HE Racing Golf GTI, despite they retired 5 laps into the last race with a technical problem.
Although they did not take part in the Guangdong’s event, MacPro Racing claimed the Teams’ title.
