Dušan Borković celebrated with the pole position his maiden appearance in the TCR Eastern Europe championship. In the Qualifying session of the season opener at Grobnik, the Serb drove his M1RA Motorsport Hyundai i30 N to set the fastest lap time, improving consistently and eventually imposing a gap of nearly one second on his fellow Hyundai driver Mat’o Konopka.
From the early stages of the 25-minute session, Borković set the pace with a lap of 1:29.636 that he soon improved to 1:29.963. As the rest of the field also improved, Konopka moved into second with the time of 1:29.814, reigning champion Milovan Vesnić (1:29.887) climbed to third and Hungarian youngster Bence Boldizs (1:29.929) to fourth.
However, Borković had still a margin for improvement and was clocked at 1:28.693 that was fast enough to nail the pole; Konopka improved as well to 1:29.613, but had to settle in second position.
2019 runner-up Jáchym Galáš qualified in fifth position as he was not able to break the 1:30 mark; he was closely followed by Petr Čížek in the new CUPRA Leon Competición and Igor Stefanovski who were only 34 and 52 thousandths behind him.
Sunday races will be streamed live at www.tcr-series.com; Race 1 at 10:45 and Race 2 at 15:25 (Central Europe Summer Time).
