At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mason Filippi celebrated his return to TC America with another victory, his fifth out of nine participations at the wheel of the Copeland Motorsport Hyundai Veloster N.
Nate Vincent and Michael McCann were classified second and third, while the Volkswagen Golf GTI of championship leader Michael Hurczyn was slowed by a fuel pressure problem and cruised to the end in seventh position overall and fourth in the TCR class, which was enough for Hurzcyn to be crowned champion.
James Walker started from the back of the TCR grid after missing the Practice and Qualifying sessions with an power steering failure, but his nightmare weekend continued as he was eliminated in an incident with Victor González right after the start.
Filippi sprinted from the pole ahead of Vincent and McCann; González’s Honda spun at T1 and collected Walker’s Alfa Romeo. Both cars retired and the safety car was deployed.
When racing resumed, Filippi began creating a gap ahead of Vincent and McCann, while Hurczyn’s pace faded and he dropped behind the trio of the Audi DSG cars of Stephen Vajda, Christian Cole and Bryan Putt.
Filippi claimed his fifth victory of the season with a 2.6-second margin over Vincent, while McCann finished a distant third. In the TCR Cup, Vajda built a comfortable lead, but with two laps to go he made a couple of mistakes, which gave Cole the opportunity to pass him and take his second win of the season, while Putt finished third and so clinched the class title.
The season will be concluded by Race 2 that is scheduled to start tomorrow at 12:30 local time (21:30 CET); live streaming at www.tcr-series.com and www.tcr-series.tv.
