Dominik Fugel claimed a dominant victory in TCR Germany’s second race at the Lausitzring and sent the title fight down to the wire. At the wheel of his Honda Civic, Fugel mastered prohibitive weather conditions and won ahead of Antti Buri and Harald Proczyk.
These results meant that the three drivers will face each other at the season’s finale, next week at Oschersleben, covered by only 18 points when 53 will be at stake. Proczyk is still in the lead, nine points clear of Buri, while Fugel has closed the gap to nine from the Finn.
The race started under a pouring rain, and Albert Legutko sprinted from P2 and led the field into Turn 1 followed by Dominik and Marcel Fugel, while Laura Kraihamer who sat on pole took a poor start and dropped back.
During the opening lap, Dominik Fugel stole the lead from Legutko, while Buri who was seventh on the grid, passed Nico Gruber for P4. Proczyk was also recovering after starting from P8 and moved into P5 in lap 3, ahead of Gruber.
The next driver on the way for Buri and Proczyk was Marcel Fugel who they both managed to overtake in lap 4; Marcel Fugel’s Honda was unbalanced after making contact with Proczyk’s Hyundai and so the younger Fugel lost two other places to Gruber and Jan Seyffert.
In lap 6, Buri overtook Legutko for second and one lap later the young Polish had to concede P3 to Proczyk. Further back, there was a thrilling battle for P6 between Gruber, Marcel Fugel and René Kircher that continued until Fugel retired in lap 12.
Dominik Fugel had benefited from the fights behind to build a leading margin of a few seconds ahead of his rivals in the title fight and despite their efforts, Buri and Proczyk couldn’t get closer to him and eventually had to settle in second and third respectively, with Legutko claiming another brilliant result in fourth.
The TCR Germany championship will finish next weekend at Oschersleben.
