Gonzalo De Andrés and Evgenii Leonov will fight for the TCR Ibérico title Sunday at Jerez de la Frontera.
Driving his SMC Junior Motorsport Peugeot 308, De Andrés scored a double victory in the series’ previous round at Jarama and so took the leadership in the standings, with a margin of 14 points over Leonov (Volcano Motorsport, CUPRA) when 50 points are on offer in the final event.
“I’m not thinking to the advantage I have, because until the chequered flag is shown anything can happen,” said De Andrés. “I know very well the circuit of Jerez and have good memories of the results I have achieved there. Obviously, Leonov is my main competitor, but the entry of Nicola Baldan will raise the level of the competition. My goal is clear: winning both races and clinching the title!”
“I love the circuit of Jerez and I am confident I can be more competitive there than I was in Jarama. I think I can fight for the title until the bitter end, but it will be a close fight in both races,” Leonov retorted.
The third title contender is De Andrés’ teammate Juan Francisco Gastañaga who races in a CUPRA and has a gap of 20 points from the leader.
A late addition to the series was Rodrigo Almeida from Mozambique, who will be driving the second Volkswagen Golf GTI entered by Élite Motorsport alongside Baldan’s.
