Winning Race 3 at Ningbo, Thed Björk rounded off a perfect weekend for the MRacing-YMR team that conquered everything: two pole positions and three race victories.
However, not all went right for the YMR as team principal Yvan Muller retired and this propelled Gabriele Tarquini on top of the standings once again. The Italian, second behind Björk in the race, has now a leading margin of eight points over the Swede, while Muller has slipped to third one further point adrift.
Björk made good use of the pole and took the lead at the start, from Norbert Michelisz, Tarquini and Esteban Guerrieri, while Yann Ehrlacher started from the pit lane as the team couldn’t finish to repair the car damaged in Race 2 before the pit lane closed.
Guerrieri overtook Tarquini for third and then him and Michelisz made contact while fighting for second; the Hungarian dropped to fourth behind Tarquini and Denis Dupont and the Argentine retired. On lap 3 there was another collision between Yvan Muller and Jean-Karl Vernay; the latter dropped to 12th and Muller retired four laps later.
Björk was leading a few seconds ahead of Tarquini who had rejected the assaults from Dupont who was chased by Michelisz, Rob Huff, Frédéric Vervisch and Nathanaël Berthon.
The race was suspended on lap 9 to fix a kerb in a chicane and when action resumed Björk, Tarquini and Dupont were firmly first, second and third. Behind them there was plenty of action with Huff, Vervisch, Berthon, Pepe Oriola and Aurélien Panis fighting for fifth.
On lap 13 Huff made a mistake and Vervisch overtook him; the Belgian put the pressure on Michelisz forcing him to make a mistake as well and moved up to fourth.
Comtoyou Racing claimed an outstanding team result with Dupont third – his first podium – Vervisch fourth, Berthon eighth and Panis ninth.
The WTCR will resume next weekend at Wuhan International Circuit for Rounds 22, 23 and 24.
