The 2018 WTCR got underway with a wet Practice session at Marrakech.
YMRT’s teammates Thed Björk and Yvan Muller topped the timesheet with laps of 1:32.821 and 1:32.862 respectively, at the wheel of their Hyundai i30 N TCR cars.
Björk has emerged as the fastest halfway though the session, posting a sequence of provisional fastest laps – 1:33.209, 1:33.004, 1:32.825 – before improving by a further four thousandths of a second. Muller set the second fastest lap just before the end of the practice.
Rob Huff (SLR Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR) 1:32.891, Pepe Oriola (Campos Racing Cupra TCR) 1:33.079 and Jean-Karl Vernay (WRT Audi RS3 LMS) 1:33.232 rounded off the top five and they were followed by the BRC Hyundai cars of Norbert Michelisz (1:33.315) and Gabriele Tarquini (1:33.340).
The first of the Honda Civic TCR cars, the Münnich Motorsport’s of Yann Ehrlacher ranked eighth (1:33.399) ahead of Fabrizio Giovanardi (Mulsanne Racing Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR) 1:33.729 and Erlacher’s teammates Esteban Guerrieri (1:33.779) and James Thompson (1:33.797).
All in all there were cars of six different brands covered by less than one second in the top-eleven positions. The best of the DG Sport Compétition’s Peugeot 308 TCR cars was Aurélien Comte’s, in 20th position.
There were a number of spins on the wet track, but the only incident occurred in the dying moments, when Zsolt Dávid Szabó crashed his Zengő Motorsport Cupra.
