Enrico Bettera, with the Pit Lane Competizioni Audi RS 3 LMS, took his revenge on yesterday’s bad luck, winning Race 2 at Monza from the reigning champion Salvatore Tavano who left the circuit as the points leader.
The third spot of the podium went to the 16-year-old Jacopo Guidetti, although he recorded the very same elapsed time as Marco Pellegrini, because of a 5-second penalty.
The race started on a drying track after the morning’s showers, with the field divided in terms of tyres choice: some drivers chose wets, others opted for slicks and some mixed the two kinds.
Felix Wimmer, on wets, took the lead from the top-ten reverse pole, while Massimiliano Mugelli stole second with a perfect start and Marco Pellegrini was given a drive-through for moving before the green light.
A very fast Mugelli took the lead ahead of a quintet of drivers who delivered a fierce battle: Wimmer, Andrea Argenti, Tavano, Bettera and Matteo Greco. They swapped positions several times and chased Mugelli; eventually Bettera moved into the lead on lap 6.
Mugelli, whose Alfa Romeo Giulietta was on wets, struggled to keep his chasers behind. At the Parabolica, Gavrilov lost control of his Audi and collected both Mugelli and Greco; the latter spun off onto the gravel, the Russian retired with a broken suspension and Mugelli pitted for repairs while the safety-car was deployed.
At the restart, Bettera pulled away followed by Tavano, while Guidetti passed Bergonzini and Argenti to finish third. The championship will resume at Misano on May 17/19.
