Motorsport veteran Arturo Merzario prepares to make his first appearance in a TCR car on the occasion of the fifth round of the TCR DSG Endurance championship that takes place this weekend at Imola’s Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
In the two-hour race, the 76-year-old driver will share an Audi RS 3 LMS with Mariano Costamagna.
“This is one of the most competitive championships in Italy, with the potential to become an Italian version of the DTM. Therefore I have been very pleased to accept the invitation to join it at Imola!” Merzario said.
A former works driver for Abarth, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, Merzario was a regular in Formula One in the Seventies and also established himself as one of the strongest sports car drivers of the decade. Amongst his most remarkable victories are the Targa Florio (twice), the 1000 km races of Spa, Nürburgring and Monza and a second place in the Le Mans 24 Hours. He was a member of the World Sportscars Championship winning teams in 1972 (Ferrari), 1975 and 1977 (both Alfa Romeo).
During the current season he has taken part in the historical Mille Miglia at the wheel of a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Zagato that belongs to the Alfa Romeo museum.
