Antti Buri has taken the lead of the 2020 TCR Germany drivers’ standings after winning the first race of the weekend in a lights-to-flag display in his Engstler-run Hyundai, finishing ahead of the two Honda cars of Tiago Monteiro and Dominik Fugel.
Buri made the perfect start from pole position, in contrast to Harald Proczyk, who led the points going into the race. The Austrian made a slow getaway from fourth on the grid in his Hyundai and fell behind the fast-starting Volkswagen of Džiugas Tovilavičius and the Honda of Marcel Fugel.
Buri led the way from Monteiro and Dominik Fugel, while the safety car was out on lap one after Hyundai guest driver Luca Engstler stopped on track with an apparent technical issue.
When the race resumed on lap four, the top three broke away from the pack, while Tovilavičius was fighting to keep fourth place from Marcel Fugel’s Honda, with Proczyk in turn trying to find his way past Fugel, but to no avail.
From then on, it was a rather pedestrian race, with the top three drivers never getting close enough to attack each other, leaving all the action with the battle for fourth, but even then Marcel Fugel and Proczyk never really were able to make a realistic attempt to pass the Lithuanian ahead of them.
Buri went on to win the race 1.8 seconds clear of Monteiro, who as a guest driver doesn’t score points, so Dominik Fugel picked up 18 points despite finishing third on the road.
Tovilavičius was over ten seconds behind the top three in fourth, with Marcel Fugel and Proczyk right behind him.
Buri now assumes the championship lead on 233 points, seven points clear of Proczyk, and 15 clear of Dominik Fugel, with all three still able to win the championship in tomorrow’s final race of the season.
