Former World Touring car champion Andy Priaulx returned to victory in Macau twelve years after conquering his third world title there in 2007. Priaulx also completed a clean sweep for Lynk&Co as his victory in WTCR Race 3 followed those scored by Yvan Muller in yesterday’s Race 1 and in Race 2 earlier today.
Behind Priaulx came Rob Huff who desperately put the pressure on his fellow countryman throughout the race, chasing his tenth victory on the Guia circuit, while Jean-Karl Vernay completed the podium in third position.
Priaulx started better than Huff who sat on pole and led another processional race. The leading quartet of Priaulx, Huff, Vernay and Johan Kristoffersson was in a league of its own and pulled away from the rest of the field. The gaps between them were small, but nobody was able to attempt an overtaking manoeuvre.
Behind them, Thed Björk cruised in fifth position and further back Nicky Catsburg was keeping Yvan Muller at bay. Positions didn’t change until the last lap, when Björk slowed down to let Muller move up to sixth and close the gap to the leaders of the standings.
Esteban Guerrieri and Norbert Michelisz finished where they had started, tenth and twelfth respectively. And so the battle for the title got even tighter when only the three races in Malaysia have left.
Michelisz’s leadership has been cut to 9 points over Guerrieri, while Muller is only two further points behind; as for Björk, he remains within striking distance, 28 points behind.
The WTCR’s finale of the season will be at Sepang on December 13/15.
