The Liqui Moly Team Engstler made a clean sweep in the Qualifying for the opening event of the TCR Asia and TCR Thailand at Sepang International Circuit.
Luca Engstler set pole position in Q2 with a lap of 2:15.882, beating his new teammate Mitchell Cheah by 15 thousandths of a second. The young Malaysian, a rookie in the series, was followed by Ecuador’s Diego Moran (2:16.192) at the wheel of the third Volkswagen Golf GTI car run by the German team. Lo Sze Ho qualified fourth in the Maximum Racing Honda Civic, nearly 7 tenths off the pole.
A delighted Luca Engstler commented: “It was a perfect lap. The team did a perfect job and the car was just perfect. It was my first time here and I need to say thank you to Mitchell, on Thursday, he taught me the track and now we did it. I am happy.”
Cheah echoed: “I feel good but my expectations was to smash the qualifying and be on pole but P2 is fine. I’m very close to with my teammate so it was a good result. The team can go into tomorrow’s race with a really good feeling with P1-P3, so we can all be on the podium.”
Reigning champion Chariya Nuya was the fastest of the TCR Thailand drivers, qualifying seventh overall with a lap of 2:17.669 in the Billionaire Boy Racing Honda Civic. Nuya managed to beat the Vattana Motorsport Civic of Pattarapol Vongprai by only 37 thousandths of a second.
